How to use it
Where it goes, and how
Solid zinc, right where the sun lands first.
-
Step 1: Draw it on
Wind up a little of the stick and draw a solid layer across your nose, cheekbones and ear tips, then anywhere else the sun hits first.
-
Step 2: Bold or blended
Leave brights and white as proper stripes. With a skin tone, feather the edge with a fingertip, but leave the layer thick: that layer is doing the protecting.
-
Step 3: Go again
Reapply every two hours, and after swimming, sweating or towel drying. Keep it out of your eyes.
Tip
Keep one in the beach bag, one in the school bag and one in the kit bag, and you'll never be caught without.
FAQ
Zinc stick questions
What is a zinc stick?
A twist-up stick of solid sunscreen with zinc oxide in it. It sits thick and doesn't slide, which is why people use it on noses, cheeks and ears.
Are the sticks water resistant?
Yes, rated 4 hours water resistant. Reapply every two hours, and after swimming, sweating or towel drying.
What's the difference between the 12g and Extreme sticks?
The 12g range covers Light and Medium skin tones, white, and pink, blue, green and yellow. Extreme sticks hold 15g and come in 11 shades. All of them are SPF 50+ and rated 4 hours water resistant.
Are zinc sticks mineral only?
No. They combine zinc oxide with other sunscreen filters: each stick lists its active ingredients on its product page. For zinc oxide as the only active ingredient, choose Pure Zinc.
Can kids use zinc sticks?
Yes, children over 6 months.
How do the mix & match savings work?
Mix any single zinc sticks: Extreme, skin tone, white or colour. Buy 2 and save 10%, 3 and save 15%, or 4 or more and save 20%. The saving comes off automatically at checkout. Value packs are already discounted, so they don't count towards it.
What takes it off?
It's built to hang on, so water alone won't shift it. Rub in a cleansing oil or balm to loosen it, then wash with warm water and soap.
Guide
Zinc sticks: a quick guide
Picking a stick, wearing it well, and getting it off.
What is a zinc stick?
Sun Zapper began on the Australian coast in 1995 and the stick has been our signature ever since. It's solid sunscreen with zinc oxide, so it goes on thick and stays where you draw it: noses, cheekbones, ear tips. It slips into a boardie pocket, a wetsuit or a ski jacket.
12g or Extreme?
Our 12g sticks come in Light, Medium, white and four brights. Extreme is the 15g big brother, in 11 shades. Every one is SPF 50+ and rated 4 hours water resistant.
Skin tone, white or bright?
To blend in, go Light or Medium Skin Tone, or an Extreme Tan, Bronze or Golden Brown. To see exactly where it's on, White is the classic. To be seen, go bright.
Putting it on properly
Wind up a little and draw a solid layer over dry skin, going over each spot twice: a thin layer gives less protection. Reapply every two hours, and after swimming, sweating or towel drying.
Sunscreen is one part of sun protection
Cancer Council's SunSmart message still says it best: slip on clothing, slop on SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, slap on a broad-brimmed hat, seek shade and slide on sunglasses. Avoid prolonged high-risk sun exposure, and protect your skin whenever the UV index is 3 or above. Frequent use and re-application, as directed on the label, is what makes sunscreen work.
