Zinc sunscreen questions

Cream or stick: which do I need?

Usually both. Put a cream or lotion on arms, legs and body, and a zinc stick on noses, cheeks and ears, where people tend to burn first.

What does SPF 50+ mean?

SPF 50+ is the highest SPF category on Australian sunscreens: very high protection. SPF 30 and SPF 50 are high protection. You only get the protection on the label if you apply plenty and reapply.

Which products are water resistant?

Zinc sticks, Ultra Clear, Extreme Zinc Lotion and Sports Mesh are 4 hours water resistant. For Pure Zinc creams, check the label. Reapply after swimming, sweating or towel drying, and at least every 2 hours.

Can children use Sun Zapper?

Yes, from 6 months: Kids SPF 50 and Baby SPF 30 are made for them.

Creams, lotions and sticks

Pure Zinc creams have 25% non-nano zinc oxide as their only active, for faces and bodies. Ultra Clear, Extreme Zinc Lotion and Sports Mesh are SPF 50+ lotions rated 4 hours water resistant. Zinc sticks put a solid layer exactly where you want it.

Choosing your SPF

SPF 50+ is very high protection, the top category in Australia. SPF 30 and SPF 50 are high protection. Choose SPF 50+ for long days outside, and remember a higher SPF doesn't mean you can stay out longer: reapply just as often.

Sunscreen is one part of sun protection

Cancer Council's SunSmart message still says it best: slip on clothing, slop on SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, slap on a broad-brimmed hat, seek shade and slide on sunglasses. Avoid prolonged high-risk sun exposure, and protect your skin whenever the UV index is 3 or above. Frequent use and re-application, as directed on the label, is what makes sunscreen work.
