Sunscreen basics

What is zinc oxide sunscreen?

What does SPF 50+ mean?

What does broad spectrum mean?

It covers both UVA, which is linked with skin ageing, and UVB, the main cause of sunburn.

How much sunscreen is enough?

Most people use too little. Cancer Council suggests around 35mL, about 7 teaspoons, for an adult's whole body: a teaspoon for each arm, each leg, your front, your back, and your face, neck and ears.

How often should I reapply?

Go by the directions on the label. As a general rule, reapply every two hours, and after swimming, sweating or towel drying, even with a water resistant sunscreen.

When do I need sunscreen?

Whenever the UV index is 3 or above, which in most of Australia is most of the year, even on cool or cloudy days. Check the daily UV forecast in the free SunSmart app or on the Bureau of Meteorology website.

Is sunscreen enough on its own?

No. Sunscreen is only one part of sun protection. Slip on clothing, slop on sunscreen, slap on a broad-brimmed hat, seek shade and slide on sunglasses, and avoid prolonged high-risk sun exposure.

How do I put a stick on?

Wind up a little and draw a solid layer over dry skin. Leave it visible rather than rubbing it away, and keep it out of your eyes. Reapply every two hours, and after swimming, sweating or towel drying.

What takes it off?

Massage in a cleansing oil or balm to loosen it, then wash with warm water and soap.
